STAR Method

The STAR method is a structured approach to answering behavioral interview questions by discussing a specific situation, task, action, and result. It helps candidates provide clear, concise, and relevant responses that demonstrate their skills and experiences

This acronym stands for:

  1. Situation
  2. Task
  3. Action
  4. Result

Let’s break it down.

Situation

Start by giving the context, set the scene of what was happening. With the product, company, team, customer, etc. Why was the problem a problem? Or why was it important to accomplish the goal?

Paint the picture for the hiring manager. This context will support the following information.

Task

What was your role and responsibility in all of this?

This helps the hiring manager understand how you fit into all of this.

Action

Outline the actions that you took to get the job done, whether working to solve a problem or accomplish a specific goal.

Be specific about your actions here. This is where you discuss how you rolled up your sleeves to make a difference.

Result

This is really where you shine. You took action to solve the problem or accomplish the goal, but how do you know that it was solved?

This is where you speak to the results of your efforts, speaking about the impact of your actions.
